Total Yarding 693

A drop in numbers today with a total of 693 in both the veal and liveweight sales. There was a fairly even representation of all categories with some good lines of grown steers and heifers selling well along with prime cows and slaughter bulls. Younger cattle in feedlot specs were holding values however even with some fresh faces in the buyer gallery plainer tail end calves lacking fat cover and breeding regardless of sex struggled to sell making 10c to 120ckg.

Vealer steers showing reasonable fat cover and condition ranged from 150c to 298c while better condition vealer heifers made 120c to 232c/kg. Yearling steers Local or pastoral showing fat cover suited to feedlots up to 330kg returned 188c to 280c while heavier steers sold from 160c to 246c/kg. The same story with yearling heifers from all areas showing feeder potential under 330kg were selling from 126c to 190c while heavier heifers realized 170c to 214c/kg.

Grown steers ranged from 154c to 222c while grown heifers sold from 160c to 208c/kg. light plain pastoral cows started at 40c up to 120c with bigger frames while medium cows made 130c to 180c and prime heavy cows topped at 188c/kg.

Shipping bulls within Live export specs returned 120c to 212c while slaughter bulls were still selling well making 166c to 210c/kg.

MUCHEA SHEEP AND LAMB REPORT 09/04/2024
Total Yarding: 9,126 - Sheep 4,922 - Lambs 4,204

Numbers were down by almost 2000 head from the previous sale before the Easter break. Lambs made up almost half of the sale with light and store weights dominating against lighter supplies of trade and heavy lambs. The lighter lamb market gained in values by $4/6 helped with enquiry from 2 eastern states buyers bidding on selected lines. Heavy mutton also lifted along with slaughter rams although the gains for rams was mainly driven by quality.

Most store lambs lifted $4/6 ranging from $10 to $70 while light lambs enjoyed the same gains selling from $60 to $91/head. Heavier lambs were firm with trade lambs returning $81 to $118 and heavy lambs sold to a top of $136/head.

Merino wether hoggets with a fleece were making $40 to $65 while Merino ewe hoggets also with wool returned $30 to $59 and Crossbred hoggets sold to a top of $70/head.

Boner ewes were equal starting at $5 up to $17 while medium ewes were selling from $20 to $35 and heavy ewes topped out at $52/head. Mature rams also gained marginally selling from $5 to $75/head.

There were similar numbers to the previous sale before the Easter break with the majority made up of cows and heifers with very few steers and under 100 bulls penned. Mature cattle presented mostly in slaughter condition however quality in younger yearlings and weaners was down from previous weeks. The prime cattle market remained strong and fortunately there were several fresh faces in the restocking sector helping to keep the market on plainer cattle buoyant.

Lighter framed vealer steers with little fat cover and dry coats ranged from 100c to 210c while heavier steers with bigger frames averaged 270c and sold to a top of 288c/kg. light framed vealer heifers with little weight once again proved hard to attract bids however with more weight and better frames returned 180c to 244c/kg. Yearling steers were selling from 180c to 290c while Yearling heifers in plainer condition under 280kg again struggled to attract bids starting at 70c up to 164c while the better presented heifers over 280kg sold from 184c to 262c/kg.

Grown steers returned 200c to 230c while grown heifers sold from 156c to 212c/kg. Light cows made 80c to 142c, medium cows 130c to 180c and prime cows realized 190c/kg.

Very few Shipping bulls were penned ranging from 120c to 215c while slaughter bulls returned 150c to 210c/kg.
